Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for ground support installation
   • Access, interpret and apply ground support instillation documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Select appropriate type of equipment and ground support materials according to job type, work plan specifications and site conditions
   • Carry out pre-start, start-up, park up, shutdown and secure equipment procedures
   • Communicate and coordinate activities with others prior to, during and on completion of the work activity
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for an emergency
2. Set up for installation
   • Remove any surface soils and/or vegetation and expose bedrock
   • Scale down loose material
   • Position drill at designated angle and according to equipment limitations
   • Position drill holes according to ground support design and ground support plan to maximise lamination of rock layers
3. Assemble and install ground support
   • Assemble anchors to full depth according to ground support plan
   • Drill holes to specified diameter and depth in accordance with type of ground support and work plan specifications
   • Install and tension anchors and bolts to appropriate pattern and tensioning degree
   • Install water suppression devices minimising water infiltration to ground supports
   • Check ground support periodically, monitor creepage and adjust stressing
4. Conduct housekeeping activities
   • Clean, check, maintain and store plant, tools and equipment
   • Report issues identified with plant, tools and equipment

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

implements requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of installing open-cut mine ground support including:

selecting and using hand and power tools

selecting and applying drilling techniques

working wearing personal protective equipment

using vehicle directions and signal information

following equipment cleaning and maintenance requirements and procedures

operating equipment effectively

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the installation of open-cut mine ground support that meets all of the required outcomes including:

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

completing required verbal and written records and reporting

applying hazard identification procedures

demonstrates completion of installing open-cut mine ground support that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

selecting appropriate type of equipment and ground support materials according to job type, work plan specifications and site conditions

installing anchors and bolts to the appropriate pattern and tension degree

minimising water infiltration to ground supports by installing water suppression devices

monitoring creepage, and adjusting stressing to maintain ground support

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of installing open-cut mine ground support through:

equipment processes, safety requirements, technical capability and limitations

basic geological and technical data (rock formation)

de-watering procedures and characteristics

ground support characteristics and applications

consequences of spills
